Questo dettagliatissimo Set, di 2.354 pezzi, comprende la ricostruzione dello Space Shuttle Discovery e del telescopio spaziale Hubble, oltre ad omaggiare il 40esimo anniversario del programma spaziale NASA iniziato nel 1981.
Lo Space Shuttel è dotato di carrello di atterraggio, porte del vano di carico apribili, i tre motori per il lancio e sistema frenante. All’interno è pieno di particolari dettagliati come la cabina coi cinque posti dell’equipaggio, i pannelli di controllo, il braccio robotico (Remote Manipulator System o RMS) per agganciare e rilasciare Hubble, la camera d’aria per il vano di carico, l’antenna in banda Ku per le comunicazioni, telecamere per monitorare le operazioni.
Lo Space Shuttel è lungo 55 cm, con una apertura alare di 34 cm.
Il telescopio spaziale Hubble, che nella sua storia ha condiviso immagini spettacolari dal cosmo, è costruito al dettaglio in pezzi in argento metallizzato riflettente e ha i pannelli solari in lamina d’oro. Il telescopio può essere riposto nel vano di carico pronto per essere collegato al braccio RMS per il dispiegamento.
Sia lo Space Shuttel sia l’Hubble son dotati di appoggi e targhe informative per un’ottima esposizione.
Milan Madge, LEGO® Set Designer ha commentato: “Lo Space Shuttle è il veicolo più complesso mai realizzato, quindi, come puoi immaginare, tradurre questo in LEGO® è stata una sfida entusiasmante. Nel veicolo reale ogni centimetro di spazio viene utilizzato in modi ingegnosi. In generale, in un modello LEGO® possiamo fare affidamento sulle dimensioni per ospitare la struttura che tiene insieme l’intero set, ma sul Discovery Space Shuttle avevamo bisogno di creare un esterno liscio e un interno in grado di contenere il carico utile. Aggiungi un carrello di atterraggio funzionale e avrai un vero puzzle. Questa è stata senza dubbio la parte più impegnativa di questo modello: cercare di accoppiare il carrello di atterraggio anteriore e principale senza rimuovere alcuno spazio dal vano di carico e senza compromettere la struttura del modello”.

This very detailed Set, of 2,354 pieces, includes the reconstruction of the Space Shuttle Discovery and the Hubble space telescope, as well as paying homage to the 40th anniversary of the NASA space program started in 1981.
The Space Shuttel is equipped with landing gear, load compartment doors that can be opened, the three engines for launch and braking system. Inside it is filled with detailed details such as the cabin with five crew seats, the control panels, the robotic arm (Remote Manipulator System or RMS) to hook and release Hubble, the air chamber for the cargo compartment, Ku band antenna for communications, cameras to monitor operations.
The Space Shuttel is 55 cm long, with a wingspan of 34 cm.
The Hubble Space Telescope, which in its history has shared spectacular images from the cosmos, is built retail in silver reflective metallized pieces and has gold foil solar panels. The telescope can be stored in the load compartment ready to be connected to the RMS arm for deployment.
Both the Space Shuttel and the Hubble are equipped with supports and information plates for excellent exposure.
Milan Madge, LEGO® Set Designer commented: “The Space Shuttle is the most complex vehicle ever made, so as you can imagine, translating this into LEGO® was an exciting challenge. In the actual vehicle, every inch of space is used in ingenious ways. In general, in a model LEGO® we can rely on the size to accommodate the structure that holds the entire set together, but on the Discovery Space Shuttle we needed to create a smooth exterior and an interior that could contain the payload.
Add a functional landing gear and you’ll have a real puzzle. This was undoubtedly the most challenging part of this model: trying to pair the front and main landing gear without removing any space from the cargo compartment and without compromising the structure of the model”.
